(Life Size - see coffee cup in photograph 8 for an idea of scale). Vital to the plot, the film opens with the discovery of the original prop fossil jutting from a rock face.
Some mystery surrounds the original prop. Like the onscreen fossil much of its past has been shrouded by the mists of time and some archeological digging was required. So to help uncover the facts Factory Entertainment turned to its very own Dr. Maia, monster expert and general all round Creature-aficionado-extraordinare Mr Bob Burns. No known example of the original prop survives.Unbelievably, although a common practice at the time, it was thrown away after the production ended. Lurking in Bob's basement however were some rare behind the scenes photographs of the sculptor of the original prop Mr. Mueller can be seen in the images holding an extra cast of the prop that was made as a back-up. The location of this back-up casting is now unknown but it was extensively photographed. It's important to note however that the photos were taken some time after the production and the casting had darkened significantly with age from it's on-screen look.
Armed with these and a host of other reference images, plus Bob's encyclopaedic knowledge of the film Factory turned to sculptor Tyler Ham to undertake the daunting forensic-sculpting task of recreating the lost original to the highest degree of accuracy. Consulting with Bob at every turn, Tyler recreated the most minute details and using sophisticated techniques to extrapolate accurate 3d measurements from 2d images and constructed a master sculpt indistinguishable from the original. Each replica is cast in heavyweight stone effect polyresin and then hand painted to create an aged fossil effect. Support bars are permanently moulded into the wrist bones to create stability and a durable replica suitable for display, mirroring the'specimen' presentation style seen in the film during the scenes when the fossil is examined at the marine biology institute. Care should be taken with the piece, in particular the fingers, which are thin and inherently delicate.
Never attempt to bend the fingers or hang anything from them. The fossil hand and arm are on a black wire armature that slots into 2 holes on the square black display base (with movie logo in silver on the reverse & 4 soft feet), with a separate'fake rock' (in the same material and style as the prop) with a black felt base that stands on the front, with a silver metal plaque on the front with black lettering showing the movie logo / prop details & issue number - this is no. 420 of 500 (see photographs 6 & 11). Comes with the laminated Certificate Of Authenticity (see photograph 7) and original cardboard packing box which is in the style of a wooden packing crate with'Devonian Fossil / Manaje Con Cuidado / Instituto De Biologia De Maritima / Moragio Bay' in stencilled lettering.
